If your character isn't a farmer, he or she is likely to know one. In a town this small, it can't be helped. This file is also of interest to merchant characters, as the small farmers are just as likely to pay you with produce from their farm as with cash. The following information is drawn from "Victorian America: Transformations in Everyday Life", by Thomas J. Schlereth , and portrays an average year in the life of the Savage family farm in the 19th century.
January and February
May butcher some livestock (cows or hogs) for home consumption. Wood is cut for use as firewood or fence rails, and fodder moved from the fileds into the barnyard for remaining livestock to consume.
March
Grub and clear brushland, and begin the spring lambing.
April
Spray the apple orchard with a solution of lye and lime to kill off bugs. Sowing of the oats.
May
Potatoes, sorghum (a cereal crop), and early corn is planted.
June
Sheep shearing occurs. Corn fields are plowed. The family members work off their 'road tax'.
July and August
Winter wheat fields are manured and plowed. Seed corn is picked.
September
Fall planting, hogs are fattened, sorghum is ground, and wheat is threshed.
October
Corn and apples are picked, potatoes are dug up.
November and December
Winter wheat is planted to grow next spring. If the weather holds, new land is cleared and fence rails split.
