They prided themselves on their hardihood and courage, even on their recklessness and profligracy. Each claimed to own the best horse; to have had the wildest adventure; to have made the most narrow escapes; to have killed the greatest number of bears and indians; to be the greatest favorite with the indian belles, the greatest consumer of alcohol, and to have the most money to spend."

The free trapper did pay a high price for his freedom as he was at the whim of market fluctuations and he was sometimes still at the mercy of a company to give him credit at the end of a bad year.

Oldman Rivers

Little is known about this man's origins. In fact little is known about this man at all. He is more of a local folk tale really, a fixture in the mountains and wilderness that surrounds the territory of Lago.

He occasionally wanders into town to purchase supplies and such when needed. Yet, it is quite clear to all that know his story that he can survive, and has done so for numerous years. In addition to his ability to subsist off the land and the harsh conditions, it is also spoken of in small circles that this man knows the area better then most.

Recently rumors have started to circulate as to why this man chooses to remain out in the wilderness year after year. It is said that he was married with a small cabin in the woods. He returned home after a long day of hunting to find her missing, this being nearly ten years ago. He still wanders the wilderness looking for her and in his mind she is still alive and depending on him to be found.
